RIP Scott Weiland – Our Top Scott Weiland Songs Part 3

Good evening Loyal Subscribers and welcome to the We Remember Scott Weiland Blog sponsored by the Poop Culture Podcast…can’t say that I was surprised when I saw the text from Deric Boobie this morning informing me of Weiland’s departure but still sad considering he put out a lot of quality music over the past 25 years. Pretty much everyone is analyzing his work with STP and Velvet Revolver but I am going to take a track by track look at the record he released this year (what, you didn’t know he released an album this year?)…

SCOTT WEILAND AND THE WILDABOUTS (BLASTER)

1) Modzilla…Chunky guitar riff opens the record and is soon joined by a catchy chorus…this reminds me a lot more of Velvet Revolver than STP which is probably why I didn’t pay that much attention to it when it was first released back in the spring…I didn’t mind the VR but I always preferred the Pilots…solid open offering, four sex type things out of five sex type things…

2) Way She Moves…A little more mid-tempo with some snaky electric guitar filtering in…another head-bobbing chorus that definitely bears more resemblance to his original band…last thirty seconds were a bit superfluous…three plush cushions out of five plush cushions

3) Hotel Rio…Shea the Beagle is on my lap and I am playing drums his back along to the beat of this tune…another infectious guitar riff…four sour girls out of five sour girls

STP ALBUM RANKINGS:

1) Purple

2) Core

3) Four

4) Tiny Music…

5) Shangri-La-Dee-Da

6) 2010 reunion album which I remember nothing about

Back to the album…

4) Amethyst…Another solid power pop tune and a third of the way through the record the Wildabouts are almost sounding like Stone Temple Revolver…four days of the week out of five days of the week

5) White Lightning…Metal sludge! First song you could truly call a Wildabout original…four big emptys out of five big emptys

6) Blue Eyes…Yearning anthem about some blue eyes that never let Weiland down…three lady picture shows out of five lady picture shows…

7) Bleed Out…Well at least this song title was incorrect and Weiland just died in his sleep…two wicked gardens out of five wicked gardens…

SOCCER SIDE NOTE: Watching the Capital One Cup match between the Lads of Liverpool and Southampton and Daniel Sturridge just scored one of the best goals of the season, broke his man down easily and then left-footed it past the disbelieving keeper! Sweet holy tits, he just scored again with a cracking volley! Ringo is very happy!

LIVE STONE TEMPLE PILOTS:

Fall 2000: Saw them in Scranton, don’t remember that much about the show but we were pretty close and one of the dude’s I went with got his glasses knocked off in the pit…I also had to miss a Mets playoff game to see this…

SUMMER 2008: During the reunion tour, saw them at CMAC with the Snyder Brothers and Jaime Escalante (I think)…solid set that was filled with hit after hit, really glad I went to see it now…

8) Youth Quake…Propulsive!! The pretty lady just arrived home and had never heard of Scott Weiland and even shook her head when I said he sang for Stone Temple Pilots…but she did recognize ‘Interstate Love Song’ when I put it on so tiny credit earned…four creeps out of five creeps

9) Beach Pop…”C’mon sugar, we are going to get married!” Very appropriate lyric considering the nuptials are only two weeks away! This is probably my favorite song on the record, varying from a Beach Boys like chorus to a couple of punky interludes…five meatplows out of five meatplows

CHESTER BENNINGTON: Fuck, I must have forgotten about the fact that this dude tours around with the other members of STP…ugh, Linkin Park can eat a big bag of dicks…

10) Parachute…This sounds like a song that we have already heard as the choruses do all kind of blend together…decent outro…three crackermans out of five crackermans

11) 20th Century Boy…”20th century boy, I want to be your toy”…reminds me of the classic Meet The Mockers tune, “Electric Fornication” http://meetthemockers.bandcamp.com/track/electric-fornication

CARPET BAGGERS: Fuck, I hate the “We Will Wash Your Carpet” Sales People…that is the second time in a few months I had to chase them off my porch and I will not tell them what room in the house has the most foot traffic…

12) Circles…Acoustic shamble of a song that reminds me of his underrated solo record from the late 90’s…Barbarella was hot shit back in the Plattsburgh days, I remember listening to that song on the Alpha Sig fraternity porch (which has since been destroyed) the day after my #weed got taken away by some overzealous public safety officers…four sex and violences out of five sex and violences…

FINAL VERDICT: Maybe I am grading on a curve due to the tragic news but that was a pretty solid rock’n’roll record…granted ‘Interstate Love Song’ blew all of it out of the water…ok, thanks for reading and I’ll be over here rolling some bowling balls at Planet Rock!
